L’église de la Nativité à Bethléem constitue un site épigraphique exceptionnel. L’importante campagne de restauration (2013-2020) et la bibliographie récente consacrée à cet édifice permettent désormais d’étudier des centaines d’inscriptions et de graffitis sur les mosaïques, les peintures et les murs de ce sanctuaire érigé sur le lieu présumé de la naissance du Christ. Le site présente une symphonie graphique – voire une cacophonie – en latin, grec, arabe, syriaque, arménien, géorgien, slave et en écriture russe, réalisée au fil des siècles par des pèlerins et des voyageurs, mais aussi par les autorités et les différentes communautés religieuses.
L’objectif de cet ouvrage réalisé dans le cadre de l’ERC GRAPH-EAST, qui rassemble des épigraphistes d’horizons divers, ainsi que des historiens, des historiens de l’art et des restaurateurs, est d’aborder ces écrits sous différents angles. Quelles typologies d’actes graphiques sont mises en lumière et peut-on s’affranchir des étiquettes « graffitis » et « inscriptions » ? À quoi servent-elles ? Avec quels matériaux et selon quelles techniques ont-elles été réalisées, et par qui ? Où se situaient-elles dans l’ensemble de l’église, qui comprend les grottes, le cloître et les bâtiments monastiques ? Cette étude explore la stratigraphie des inscriptions et propose plusieurs plans détaillant leur répartition, révélant ainsi un nouveau chapitre de l’histoire du bâtiment, notamment en ce qui concerne son utilisation par les pèlerins. Elle met en lumière les différents acteurs de la communication épigraphique ainsi que les interactions entre ces actes graphiques dans les différentes écritures et langues. Toutes ces inscriptions et ces graffitis contribuent à dresser un tableau complet du riche patrimoine qu’offre ce lieu saint unique.
